DIVISION I
All student-athletes seeking a transfer from St. Lawrence University need to meet with the DI Director of Compliance.
It is recommended that any student-athlete considering a transfer learn about the rules and regulations concerning transfer status and the Transfer Portal. All communication to other institutions is prohibited until a release is granted by St. Lawrence University Athletics and their name is placed on the Transfer Portal.
Division I Transfer Bylaw:
13.02.13.2 Four-Year College Prospective Student-Athletes: A four-year college prospective student-athlete whose name has been entered into the national transfer database may sign an athletics aid agreement as of the following dates: (Adopted: 10/9/24)
- (a) Undergraduate Four-Year College Transfers. The first day (7 a.m.) of the notification of transfer period in the applicable sport (see Bylaw 13.1.1.4.1).
- (b) Postgraduate Four-Year College Transfers. October 1 (7 a.m.).
13.1.1.4 Four-Year College Prospective Student-Athletes: An athletics staff member or other representative of the institution's athletics interests shall not communicate or make contact with the student-athlete of another NCAA Division I institution, or any individual associated with the student-athlete (e.g., family member, scholastic or nonscholastic coach, advisor), directly or indirectly, without first obtaining authorization through the notification of transfer process. Before making contact, directly or indirectly, with a student-athlete of an NCAA Division II or Division III institution, or an NAIA four-year collegiate institution, an athletics staff member or other representative of the institution's athletics interests shall comply with the rule of the applicable division or the NAIA rule for making contact with a student-athlete. 13.1.1.4.1 Notification of Transfer -- Undergraduate Student-Athletes: A student-athlete may initiate the notification of transfer process by providing the student-athlete's institution with a written notification of transfer and completing an educational module related to transferring. Notification of transfer must be initiated during a period specified for the applicable sport (see also Figure 13-1). If notification of transfer is provided during a specified period, the student-athlete's institution shall enter the student-athlete's information into the national transfer database within two business days of receipt of a written notification of transfer from the student-athlete or receipt of confirmation of the student-athlete's completion of the educational module, whichever occurs later. - (c) In winter sports other than basketball, a student must provide written notification of transfer during a 45 consecutive-day period beginning seven days after championship selections are made in the sport.
DIVISION III
All student-athletes seeking a transfer from St. Lawrence University can issue a self-release in order to speak with a coach at any institution.

It is recommended that any student-athlete considering a transfer speak with our DIII Compliance Coordinator to learn of rules and regulations concerning transfer status. All communication between the student-athlete and any institution is prohibited until the self-release form has been completed and received by the institution. If a student-athlete wants to put their name on the Transfer Portal they need to meet with the DIII Compliance Director.
Division III Transfer Bylaw:
13.1.1.2 Four-Year College Prospective Student-Athletes: An athletics staff member or other representative of the institution's athletics interests shall not make contact in any manner (e.g., in-person contact, telephone calls, electronic communication, written correspondence) with the student-athlete of another NCAA four-year collegiate institution, directly or indirectly, without first obtaining written permission to do so, regardless of who makes the initial contact. If permission is not granted, the second institution shall not encourage the transfer. If permission is granted, all applicable NCAA recruiting rules apply. If an institution receives a written request from a student-athlete to permit another institution to contact the student-athlete about transferring, the institution shall grant or deny the request within seven business days (see Bylaw 13.02.1) of receipt of the request. If the institution fails to respond to the student-athlete's written request within seven business days, permission shall be granted by default and the institution shall provide written permission to the student-athlete.
